Wine Review: Weinbiet Gewürztraminer Kabinett 2009

2009_Weinbiet_Gewuerz_Front Sweet, plump, and polite like that girl you brought home that mom liked so much. Not too flamboyant or intellectual, just sensible.

The flavor profile of this medium-sweet wine from a single vineyard in Pfalz is bog-standard Gewürztraminer—lychee, allspice, and orange zest on the nose and a viscous palate that shows lots of apricot. Very stout mouthfeel with just enough acidity to prevent the wine from seeming flabby, but not a lot of tactile sensation or vibrant movement.  At 10.5% alcohol there is no bitterness on the surprisingly lengthy finish.

It lacks the heady, gossamer, alchemy of the best Gewurztraminers but has plenty of flavor and pairs well with sweet or spicy foods that will ruin drier wines.

Great choice to pair with a curry.

Cost: $15

Good: Lots of flavor

Bad: Lacks vibrancy and life

Distinctive: Sweeter than most non-dessert Gewurztraminer’s on the market.
